Research

Microbiology

Microbiology research is vibrant across the school, with groups active across divisions. Collaboration between microbiology and materials science has enabled the development of a unique, well-funded and well-respected interdisciplinary expertise, studying the interactions occurring between microorganisms and inert surfaces. Particular attention is paid to oral microbiology and food microbiology. Medical microbiology, and fermentation biotechnology, are also active.

Behavioural and Environmental Biology

The Behavioural and Environmental Biology group conduct research in animal behaviour, behavioural ecology and conservation biology. Current interests include island biodiversity and biogeography; applying behavioural ecology to conservation biology and animal management; information-gathering and decision-making; habitat relationships and ecological computing. Field work is underway in the UK, Kenya, Madeira and elsewhere.
