Sitting next to the Town Hall is the Town Hall Extension designed by Vincent Harris which is clad in Stancliffe Sandstone from Darley Dale in Derbyshire, apparently to provide a link between the Hall and the Roman classical Central Library. This large building was deemed necessary to accommodate the expansion of local government which even the enormous Town Hall could not house. It was opened by King George VI in 1938. The building is built in a Gothic style but also corresponds with the modern aesthetics of the 1930s
