All materials have a surface and the design engineer normally has to make a compromise when selecting a material between its bulk properties, which often are chosen on the basis of weight and strength, and its surface properties, which are often chosen for their friction, wear, corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, electronic, or, optical properties. Members of the Surface Coatings and Characterisation Group (SCCRG) within the Dalton Research Institute at MMU have an active set of research programmes studying various aspects of the development and application of surface coatings. There are five main areas of activity: Ion-assisted coatings Please click on the Research link to get more information about current projects. |
