Hello and welcome to the home-page of the Surface Coating and Characterisation Research Group. The research group has been fortunate in attracting over £1.5M in external funding in recent years, mainly from EPSRC and STFC contracts but also from industry. The group concentrates on fundamental studies of physical and chemical vapour deposition processes to lay the foundations for industrial exploitation of new coatings with superior properties, such as material density, hardness, stress, corrosion-resistance, high temperature stability, wear, and biocompatibility. We have also taken the lead in developing a new multi-function microscope with Carl Zeiss limited which has high resolution, EDX, Wavelength Dispersive Analysis, in situ micro-Raman, electron backscattering and cathodo-luminescence. Following a successful application to EPSRC this instrument is funded as part of their Nanomaterials Instrumentation programme and is available free of charge to members of UK academia.
