Professor Colligon was appointed as Research Professor at the Manchester Metropolitan University, Manchester, UK in 1997. Previously he was Research Fellow and Senior Scientific Officer at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough (1961-8) and Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Research Professor at the University of Salford, UK where he still has an Honorary appointment.
He was Editor-in-Chief of Vacuum from 1980-89, Consultant from 1989-98 and Editor for Great Britain from 1998-present. From 1989-98 he was Secretary General of the International Union for Vacuum Science, Technique and Applications IUVSTA)
His principal area of research has been ion-surface interactions applied both to the modification of materials and to surface analysis. This work has been reported in over 100 papers in refereed scientific journals and at a similar number of conferences. Recent work has studied the modification of surfaces by ion-assisted coating methods and has generated considerable interest in producing novel surfaces for a range of applications including biomaterials, chemical sensors, corrosion resistant layers, fuel cells, hard coatings, magnetic thin films, microelectronic contacts, devices and barrier layers, optical coatings, photovoltaic devices, sensors and wear-resistant layers. This has led to many joint research programmes in the UK and with groups abroad.
